You’ve heard the saying, “Whether you believe you can or you believe you cannot, you are correct.” While simple, it is true. Our beliefs in something shape our reality, and it’s time to explore how we can harness this to be successful on our health journey.

The amount of thoughts that occupy our minds each day is enormous. Some research suggests we have around 6,000 thoughts daily, while others argue it’s closer to 60,000. Either way that is a lot of thoughts.  80% of these thoughts are negative, and 95% are thoughts from the previous day. We’re bombarding ourselves with the same negative thoughts day after day!

The Placebo Effect: Mind Over Matter

The placebo effect is an interesting phenomenon that highlights the incredible connection between our minds and bodies. When we believe in something, our bodies often follow suit, producing real improvements, even when no therapeutic substance is involved.

The placebo effect was first documented by English physician John Haygarth, who demonstrated that wooden pointers were just as effective as expensive metal ones in a medical treatment called Perkins tractors. The wooden ones were not supposed to work.  This discovery shed light on the power of belief in influencing health outcomes.

Belief in Action: World War II

During World War II, anesthesiologist Henry Beecher observed a phenomenon on the battlefield. Beecher sometimes had to substitute saline solution for morphine due to shortages. He told wounded soldiers that he was administering painkillers, surprisingly even though it was saline, most of them responded as if they had received real medication. This highlights how belief, especially in life-threatening situations, can drive actual physical changes.

As a holistic practitioner, I stress that our mind, body, soul, and spirit are all connected. Our thoughts and beliefs affect physical health.
